Unlike most games, Fate: Undiscovered Realms really punishes dying. While your pet can't die, you certainly can. You can also heal your pet at the expense of your own potions if you so desire. When its life bar reaches zero, it runs around crazy-like until it slowly regenerates a small fraction of its life back. Adding to your pet's usefulness is the fact that it can't die. Your pet can be pretty useful many times enemies will attack it first, which gives you the opportunity to kill them before they hone in on you. What adds a twist to the pet system is that you can feed your pet fish you either caught or bought to temporarily transform it into a spider or other devastating creature for a limited time. Your pet can also help you carry and sell loot. Your pet aids you in battle and, like you, gains levels through combat. At the out start, you choose between a cat or dog to accompany you. As you progress further down the stairs, you will encounter different and more challenging creatures.Īs with the original game, Fate: Undiscovered Realms teams you up with a pet companion. Sure you've got the typical dragon and giant scorpion creations, but the game also features floating brains, savage mushroom men with spears, and other kooky abominations. The creature designs are undeniably weird. There are a lot of levels in both dungeons and each area has randomized loot and respawning enemies. Both areas contain similar dark and dreary dungeons that force you to descend a series of downward spirals. There's the icy Outpost of Typhon and the forest Outpost of Druantia. You spend most of your time traversing between two realms. You can, however, store all of your belongings in a decent-sized chest if you find yourself running out of storage space. I would have appreciated an auto sort feature as shifting items around tends to get a little tedious, but the lack of this feature isn't a huge problem. As with most RPGs, you can only carry so much gear with you at one time. All of your gear is stored through a typical grid management system. Some weapons allow you to embed special stones on to them to give them various stat boosts like speed, magic, and more. Purple items are magical, teal gear is both magical and rare, and yellow items are extremely rare artifacts. The game includes a color-coded system that identifies rare items. Speaking of gear, there's quite a bit of armor, accessories, and weapons to pillage. Completing these objectives will often net you experience, money, and gear. While many RPGs allow you to accept every side quest that you come across, Fate: Undiscovered Realms only allows you to tackle three missions at a time. These quests typically consist of you going down to the lower levels of a dungeon to retrieve stolen goods, kill various monsters, defend certain statues, or escort friendly NPCs. Once you're set, it's time to do quests for various non-playable characters. Conversely, a powerful mage can be made by honing skill points into the magic trait and magic-wielding weapons. Want to make your hero a tank? Focus on your strength and vitality traits while raising your axe, sword, or club stats. Instead, you get the option to level up individual attributes. There are no wizard or warrior characters here. For those who've never had the pleasure of playing the original, the Fate series differs from the typical hack-and-slash RPG because there are no predefined class archetypes to choose from.
